Pictures below are from the Kapenguria District in Kenya, just west and south of the Uganda and Sudan borders. The people are the nomadic West Pokot Tribe with a reported population of approximately 400,000 of which only 2% have heard gospel oft Jesus Christ. In months past we have handed out over 1,000 "Water Is Life" purification drinking straws to many. Water is very scarce, and when found is full of parasites and dysentery which results in many dying each day from malaria, brucellosis, TB, typhoid and cholera. Usually water is acquired by digging 2 to 6 feet by hand down into the sand. The land is harsh and dry with very little vegetation or means to acquire food. West Pokot land is approximately 8,000 feet above sea level and almost directly centered on the equator. Daily temperatures soar in the high 90's to well over 100 degrees with nights becoming quite chilly. The Pokot people are cattle owners and purchase up to ten wives by paying a dowry of cows, goats, sheep and camels. Wives are bought from age 12 years old on with the consent and bartering agreement of their father and perspective husband. Religion consist of polytheism with the belief that their soul rests on neighboring Mount Kadam after death. Many of the leaders practice voodoo and witchcrafts, and govern the people through the fear of such. Even those who have converted to Christianity still fear the powers of the occult that is practiced. In addition, the land holds many dangers of large spiders, scorpions, Cobra, Black Mamba, Python and the African Bush snake.
